Nasal examination

The otoscope is a useful instrument in viewing the nasal passages. It has a good light source and using a wide speculum tip provides a clear view. When placing the otoscope into the nose it is important to remember to enter horizontally at first and then change the angle of the otoscope once inside the nasal cavity. In essence you are looking backwards.

If an otoscope is not available a device called a Thudicum's speculum can be used to help widen the nasal cavity. Once this is widened, use a good light source such as a that from a head light to inspect into the nasal cavity.

A guide to this is shown here  - www.entformedstudents.co.uk/thudicums.html
