To remove the brain once the cranium is entered, the meninges need to be removed from the exposed surface of the cerebrum and cerebellum. The brain should then be removed intact to include the cerebellum and medulla and placed into a large container [approximately 1 litre volume] (eg dog, cat, sheep) with approx 500-600mls of NBF. For larger species the size of the container and volume of fixative would need to be increased proportionately. It should be left in its closed container (to reduce formalin fumes) in a cool, well-ventilated environment for several days. When adequately fixed it can be wrapped in NBF-soaked cotton wool , and placed in a smaller, rigid, sealed container with approx 10ml of NBF to prevent drying.
